True Meaning of Resilience with Tom Boyd
Join us on Thursday 16th March for our True Meaning of Resilience event on the rooftop of the new A1 Building in the Maroochydore City Centre. At this event we will be joined by guest speaker Tom Boyd, ex-Western Bulldogs AFL player.
True Meaning of Resilience will shine a light on mental health and mental resilience, an often overlooked topic particularly amongst the male demographic.
Mid-way through the 2019 AFL season, Tom Boyd made the courageous decision to walk away from his career; at a time where he was one of the most highly sought after and highest paid players in the league. His decision was made off the back of the deterioration of his mental health.
Originally drafted as the number one pick in the 2013 AFL Draft at 18 years of age, Tom made the move from Melbourne to Sydney to play for the GWS Giants. After struggling to adapt to life in Sydney, Tom sought to return to his home state of Victoria, sighting 'home sickness', to continue his career. After just one year in the league he was picked up by the Western Bulldogs on a 7 year, $7 million deal.
In 2016 the Western Bulldogs finished the season as AFL Premiers. At this point Tom felt he should be on top of the world, however there was something that still wasn't quite right within him. 2017 saw Tom take a leave of absence from AFL as a result of struggling with insomnia, which had a detrimental effect on his mental and physical health. In 2018 Tom returned to the game, trying a number of things to help manage his symptoms and whilst he could juggle it at times he eventually called time on his AFL career in mid-2019.
